So was anybody gonna tell me that Jodie Whittaker and Chris Eccleston star in a filmed performance of Antigone or was I just supposed to learn that from a mean-spirited tumblr post myself?

Tagged by @call-me-rucy! Thanks for tagging me!
Rules: Tag 9 people you want to know better, or just because you feel like it I might not do this part because I’m never sure who to tag in these things...
Relationship status: Single and not really looking to mingle
Favorite colour: Blue! Especially like... when the sun sets but it’s not exactly night yet so the sky is kind of a really deep blue? I like that
Lipstick or Chapstick: Chapstick, but I’m very bad about using it regularly
Last movie I watched:  Uh... The new Star Wars I think. I don’t go to the movies often, but I have a friend in the air force who likes to go see movies when he comes down to visit, so I do see them occasionally~
Top 3 shows: Hmmmmmm... Believe it or not, I don’t watch a lot of TV either... Over The Garden Wall is a favorite cartoon of mine though. Aside from that, not much is coming to mind
Top 3 characters: In general, probably Des, Wilson P. Higgsbury (from Don’t Starve), and Franziska von Karma from the Ace Attorney series! I’d also do just Professor Layton characters, but it’s so hard for me to pick
Top 3 bands: Oh! Those would be Sleeping at Last, Lord Huron, and Florence + the Machine. It’s hard for me to pick bands, since I tend to listen to more instrumental/soundtrack things, but these three are nice
Books I’m reading: So for school, I’m currently reading the three Theban plays written by Sophocles (that is Antigone, Oedipus the King, and Oedipus at Colonus) and Scapino by Moliere (which I’m also going to go see because my Professor is in it). I’m reading The Vinyl Detective (the author’s name escapes me...) in my own time!

02. The Seven Plays of Sophocles
Tumblr media
5th century BC
✎ Sophocles
my rate: 9.5/10
mood to read  The Seven Plays of Sophocles: basically lovee greek mythology, i will say you can read each story whenever you want, not precisely to read all at the same time.
pages: 180*
As the name suggests, it’s a compilation of 7 plays: Ajax, The Women of Trachis, Electra and Philoctetes; along with the three Theban Plays: Oedipus Rex, Oedipus at Colonus and Antigone.
The first four plays narrate epic stories of survival, love and sacrifices which are the main recipe of a Greek tragedy. The well-known Theban Plays are a trilogy, they tell the story of Oedipus all his dangerous adventures and the lesson he learnt through his life.
Sophocles, in my opinion had a unique narrative, and despite the length of the plays (around 10-15 pages each) the detailing was really vast. I have to say that the language is hard to get along at first, but of course if you see the date when it was written it’s really a long way back, so of course the narrative is ancient and formal, but once you understand this is such an adventure reading each one, you feel part of the citizens!
Every play is different but they have such well created characters, their storyline is so complex and each one has a notable development. The plays have tons of memorable quotes. The complexity of the characters relies in the tests that they go through them life, and how they overcome those situations.
Another theme that the book centers on is the destiny, we know that this was very important concept in Greek mythology and this is no exception. The presence of the Oracle is in each one of the plays, it’s a vital character, if you will. And even thought each narration has its own hero and outcome, the hero is usually a god or goddess that helps our main character and the outcome is usually told in the first verses with the read of the Oracle, so it’s no surprise that in the end, despite all the efforts and fights that the characters get themselves on, they cannot escape from one force, the destiny.
What I like about The Seven Plays of Sophocles?
The main thing that I love is the Greek mythology and beliefs, I have always been intrigued by them and they never fail to amaze me. The conception of life is similar to my own, so it was easy-going reading the ideology of humans being predestined and with a determinate purpose that we must accomplish it order to end our lives.
The Greek tragedy is one of my favorite literature genres because of its antiquity and at the same time that all the things narrated in those are applicable to the modern issues. They’re so inspiring and motivational. But the main thing is that they make us believe in us and to never forget to have faith in anything or anybody or even in the forces of the universe that will forever be in our favor, we just have to pay attention and work hard, so all combine will make us reach our goals and success on them.
My favorites definitely were the Theban Plays, that trilogy really was so epic, action-packed, betrayal and overall the rise of the characters regardless of their fatal circumstances. Antigone is the definition of early girl power!
I could say that my favorite play was Oedipus at Colonus, Oedipus is one of my favorite characters and I admire him so much. The fact that this play was inspired in the last days of Sophocles is so much more exceptional because he really put his heart and soul on it, he parallels his life with the decadency of this erstwhile young and physically strong man called Oedipus, to be a man that takes care of his own decisions and accepts his consequence with a firm and strong mentality.
Oedipus does a reckoning of his early years and at the end he relies on the gods and concludes that there are forces that are beyond human understanding that move and control the world and our decisions, that there’s always pain in life but what makes it special is that it brings our ability to be strong and get out of those situations with our creativity and intelligence.
